IVRS facility launched

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University has launched a round-the-clock Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) to provide ‘instant information over telephone’ for its distance education students across the country.

Two telephone numbers have been earmarked for this facility, which was formally commissioned by Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel here on Thursday.

“The facility would provide instant access to relevant information for our distance education students and the public ,” S. Vadivelu, Director of Distance Education, said. The telephone numbers are: (0452) 2459990 and 2459596.

In addition to general information such as courses offered and admission process, the IVRS facility gives specific information to individual students about fees and dues, course completion certificate or admission status.

Dr. Vadivelu said that information could be obtained in English, Tamil or Hindi. For student-specific information, the student had to mention the enrolment number allotted by the Directorate of Distance Education at the time of admission.

“We will periodically update the data and the IVRS facility will be of convenience to over 1.2 lakh students who are on the rolls of our distance education wing,” he said. The university is taking steps to publicise the new student-friendly facility on its website.
