Staff Reporter

WIDER AUDIENCE: V. Ayothi, Professor of English, Bharathidasan University, releasing a souvenir to M. Chidambaranathan, Principal of H.H. The Rajah’s College in Pudukottai, recently.

PUDUKOTTAI: Indian literature should be translated in to English for popularising the different regional culture and customs not only throughout the country but also in other parts of the world, said speakers at a seminar on ‘Indian writing in English’ organised by the Department of English of the H.H. The Rajah’s College here recently.

They said that every Indian language was a treasure-house of literature, novels, poetry and plays, standing for the regional glory of different zones of our country. To popularise these works, every effort should be taken to translate them into English, they said.

Noted poet and former Professor and Head of Department of Literature of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, R. Balachandran, emphasised the need for translation of the great novels and literary works of regional authors into English to popularise them among the lovers of literature in India.

It would attract the global attention to a great extent, he said.

He highlighted the contribution of writers like R.K. Narayan and Raja Rao for the growth of Indian literature in English.
