KOCHI: Rallies and public meetings, which called for unity among workers, marked the May Day celebrations in the city. Activists of different trade unions, under the banner of the Trade Union Sponsoring Committee, took out a rally from the High Court Junction. The State general secretary of CITU, M.M. Lawrence, inaugurated a public meeting held in this regard. Vijayan Pillai of the AITUC presided over the meeting. INTUC leaders R. Chandrasekharan and K.P. Haridas; Charles George of TUCI; M.T.M. Sali of STU; M.K.A. Aziz of UTUC; and K.K. Hamsakoya of NLU spoke. A public meeting held in Thripunithura was inaugurated by K. Chandran Pillai, MP. Speakers at the meetings said that many corporate groups were trying to deny the workers their rights, which were gained through many struggles. A rally was taken out from South Kalamassery to Premier Junction. A rally, followed by a public meeting, was held at Eloor. Rallies and meetings were also held in Kakkanad, Piravom, Koothattukulam and Angamaly.
