Advisory calls for vigil

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has issued an advisory to all State governments to maintain a precautionary vigil on the swine population for any flu-like symptoms in the wake of increasing cases of A H1N1 virus.

It has also set up a control room to provide factual information on A H1N1 flu. The control room numbers are 011-23384190 and will function between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Information or clarification beyond the control room timings can be obtained from telephone numbers 09818002564, 09868712375 and 09868792726.

The occurrence of A H1N1 influenza (earlier known as swine flu) in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, U.K., Israel and some other countries has received widespread attention because of its potential to turn into a pandemic.

The diagnosed human cases suggest extended human-to-human transmission and links to swine are either weak or absent.

There was also no evidence yet of illness in swine in any of the affected countries at this point in time, a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture said on Friday.
