May Day march
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A large number of activists of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) organised a May Day march in the Capital on Friday demanding a “repeal of pro-imperialist new economic policies” and more jobs and wages for workers.
Workers from industrial units in several areas across the city and hospital workers took part in the march from Ramlila Maidan to Jantar Mantar. They raised slogans against contractual jobs, retrenchment and wage cuts. At the culmination of the march at Jantar Mantar the gathering was addressed by IFTU Delhi Committee president Animesh Das among others. The speakers criticised the Government for the new economic policies implemented since 1991. They said these had been promoted as a “panacea for development” but had actually “resulted in an export-oriented imperialist-dependant situation”.
