SSLC pass percentage up to 70

Girls outdo boys again; rural schools fare better than urban ones overall

Bangalore: The results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination look better this year with an overall pass percentage of 70.22 as against last year’s 66.37. The pass percentage goes a few notches higher at 75.77 when only fresh candidates are taken into account. Girls (77.25 per cent) have fared better than boys (74.38) this year as well. Schools in rural areas have done better again, as was the case last year, with pass percentage at 71.64 (urban) and 75.26 (rural).

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Commissioner for Public Instruction Kumar G. Naik said that Udupi district topped the State with 86.39 pass percentage, followed by Mandya with 83.78 and Chikkodi with 82.23. Bidar district continued to remain right at the bottom. There was an improvement in the pass percentage of the district though, from 27.39 to 41.08, he added.

Mr. Kumar said a series of quality initiatives by the department had helped improve the results, and the focus would be on educationally backward districts.

Thirty-five schools registered zero per cent results, but only one among them, in Belgaum district, is a government school.

When the performance of schools is taken into account, Bangalore South and North top the list with the largest number of schools that have secured 100 per cent results in these two districts — 92 and 71 respectively, followed by Mandya and Chikkodi — 43 each.

Though the system of ranking has been done away with, D.S. Rajanna, Director of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB), said that 617 was the highest marks scored by a student this. The “tough subject” continues to be mathematics with the lowest pass percentage in this subject, though there is considerable improvement from 72.77 last year to 82.21 this year.
