Chandy to go on fast on May 5

Special Correspondent

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will go on a day’s fast in Kannur on May 5 in protest against the alleged “false” campaign launched against the Congress and the violence allegedly perpetrated by Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson M.M. Hassan told reporters here on Saturday that Mr. Chandy would observe fast at the Stadium Corner. He said the United Democratic Front (UDF) committee would meet in Kannur the same day to chalk out the future course of action against the political violence and the “canards” being spread by the CPI(M) against the Congress.

The Congress will take out a march to the office of the Superintendent of Police in Wayanad on May 4 in protest against the delay in taking action against those involved in the alleged abduction of Poothadi grama panchayat vice-president V.N. Saseendran. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will inaugurate the march. Mr. Hassan said the Congress was ready to face an inquiry into Mr. Chandy’s visit to Kannur on polling day.

Referring to an alleged bid on the life of CPI(M) MLA C.K. Sadashivan on April 22, Mr. Hassan said Mr. Sadashivan was allegedly targeted for speaking out against the police. The Congress suspected it to be an aftermath of the schism in the CPI(M). Even elected representatives were living in the shadow of threat, he said.
