The Banyan to counsel women prisoners

CHENNAI: Prisoners with mental health issues at the women’s prison in Puzhal will benefit from psychological counselling and therapy, thanks to a MoU between The Banyan and the Director General of Prisons.
After inking the MoU with Vandana Gopikumar, Founder Trustee of The Banyan, R. Natraj, Director General of Police (Prisons) said the facility, if seen to be effective, would be extended across all prisons in the State.
Vandana Gopikumar said the intervention would be three-pronged, featuring bi-monthly visits to the prison by a psychologist/ psychiatrist, psychological/clinical interventions for those with mental health issues based on referrals and recreational programmes.
Andrew Simkin, US Consul General in Chennai advocated sharing of successful ‘models’ of partnerships of mental health care between India and the U.S.
