Directive on vehicles used for campaigning

Special Correspondent

ARIYALUR: Collector Anil Meshram, the Returning Officer for the Chidambaram (SC) Lok Sabha constituency, has issued a warning that vehicles used for campaigning without valid permits would be impounded.

Political parties and candidates should get permits from the Returning Officer for all vehicles used for campaigning.

The permits must be prominently displayed on the windscreen of the vehicle. Vehicles with even a single flag would be deemed to be involved in election campaign and such vehicles plying without permits would also be seized, he said in a press release.

Action would be taken against owners and drivers of vehicles used for campaigning without permits, he added.

Earlier, speaking at consultative meeting with police officers on arrangements being made for the elections, Mr. Meshram said that police men deployed at polling stations should not enter the booths unless summoned by the Presiding Officer.

He urged the police men deployed for polling duty to familiarise themselves with the local conditions and officials.

No symbols, posters or flags should be permitted within a radius of 100 metres of polling stations.

The Collector also urged the officers to desist from using force unless it was deemed necessary.

Superintendent of Police Najmul Hoda and other officers attended the meeting.
