Campaign rules do not spare bicycles too

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Prior permission should be obtained for deploying any kind of vehicle, from bicycles to four-wheelers, for election campaign, Collector R. Palanisamy has said.

He was speaking at a meeting of the District Standing Committee constituted for monitoring election process, held here on Sunday.

Mr. Palanisamy said that authorities would give permission within two hours to such requests. Even if top political leaders come for a single-day electioneering, it was necessary for the partymen to obtain permission for all accompanying vehicles.

Superintendent of Police A. Amalraj, who was also present at the meeting, said that police would impound unauthorised vehicles and keep them in their custody till the elections are over. Mr. Palanisamy said that if it is found that political parties were under-representing the number of vehicles used in the campaign, legal action would initiated.

All political meetings and happenings were being videographed and action would be taken against the party concerned if any violation is noticed. Each candidate had been given an expenditure limit of Rs. 25 lakh for the Lok Sabha elections. If they exceeded the limit or if accounts were fudged, the case would be referred to the Election Commission for action.

All the political parties should stop campaigning 48 hours before the commencement of polling. The Collector also noted that 15,000 new applications were received for Electors’ Photo Identity Card. A total of 7,000 out of them were withheld for insufficient information.

Mr. Palanisamy said that 2,000 EPICs were ready and would be distributed in a couple of days after getting the consent of the Election Commission. Earlier, addressing 191 regional officers on poll duty, Mr. Palanisamy said that these officials were serving as a link between the Returning Officers and the polling officials.

They had the responsibility of ensuring timely turnout of the polling officials, taking custody of electronic voting machines, before and after the elections. Election observers Sailesh Kumar Sharma, Murari G.Mishra and Nivsarkar, District Revenue Officers S.Viswanathan and Anbalagan were present.
