Ex-naxal held for extortion bid

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati police have arrested a former naxalite Janagam Srinivasa Reddy alias Mallikarjuna (32) of Adilabad district from a private hospital here on Saturday evening on charges of extortion.

Srinivas Reddy was associated with the People’s War Group (PWG) movement for 15 years when he was part of the Mahanandi, Galiveedu and Kalangi dalams. After surrendering in 1996 and joining the mainstream, he was away from public view for quite some time and surfaced three months back in Yerpedu area in the district.

Presenting him before the media here on Sunday, Additional Superintendent of Police R.N. Ammi Reddy informed that the former naxalite had targeted some private hospitals and made an extortion bid by calling himself ‘Aasanna’, the name of a central commander. He was nabbed on Saturday evening when he visited a hospital which agreed to pay the amount and in turn alerted the police.
