Low turnout

I am extremely saddened by the low voter turnout in the third phase of elections, especially in Mumbai. After the Mumbai attack, we saw thousands of citizens expressing their anger at the political class and rightly so. But the same citizens have now failed to preserve the spirit of democracy. What better way to represent one’s resentment and indignation than by exercising one’s franchise?

Subadra Kalyanaraman,

Chennai

When the voter does not want to vote for any candidate in the fray he is, in effect, exercising the ‘none-of-the-above’ option. Therein lies the important message. Low voter turnout, in election after election, may not indicate voter apathy or aversion to high or low temperatures. It may be a vote for electoral reforms.

M.H. Rao,

Hyderabad

People’s disenchantment with their leaders is on the rise as the number of candidates with dubious records has increased. These candidates do not inspire the confidence that they can serve the people. There will be a severe impact on society if persons with muscle and money power are elected to the highest decision-making bodies in large numbers.

A. Roy Chowdhury,

Varanasi
