Arches: Ombudsman orders probe

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions M.R. Hariharan Nair has directed the City Police Commissioner and the City Corporation secretary to ensure that no illegal arches are erected on city roads.

In a recent order, he directed the Commissioner to inquire whether the arches erected on city roads had the valid permission from the authorities.

Following media reports on a freak accident that happened at Over-bridge Junction in the city a few days back, the Ombudsman has registered a case highlighting the hazards caused by raising arches across roads. According to media reports, the accident took place after a bus hit the arch.

Sitting on May 28

As part of the case, the Ombudsman has issued notice to the Corporation secretary, District Collector and the Police Commissioner, who are the respondents in the case. They have been asked to present a statement on whether permission had been given for raising the arch during the sitting on the case to be held on May 28.

The statement should include the terms and conductions issued by the State government and the Police Department in erecting arches as well as the procedures put forth by the Corporation for the same, the order said.

The Ombudsman has also said that if the District Collector’s permission is required to erect arches, the latter should ensure that they are constructed and erected in a safe manner before giving permission.
