Delhi Metro Rail Corporation celebrates its 15th Foundation Day Corporation urged it to provide guidance to other organisations too NEW DELHI: On its 15th Foundation Day here on Sunday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was described as a “24-carat gold standard organisation” by the Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna. Mr. Khanna who was the chief guest at a function lauded the organisation’s performance and urged it to provide guidance to other organisations too. Stating that the DMRC has been a “24-carat gold standard organisation” from its very inception as it completed projects ahead of time and within budget, Mr. Khanna said the DMRC should consider creating a consultancy wing for assessing organisational competence of bodies in other sectors and providing them guidance. Union Urban Development Secretary and DMRC Chairman M Ramachandran said the DMRC had become a trend-setter for metro railways coming up in other cities and succeeded in making public transport “fashionable” by providing fast, futuristic, safe, reliable and comfortable travel. He said that at present, 430 km of metro rail was being built or planned in various cities at a total cost of Rs.85,000 crore and the Union Urban Development Ministry had drafted guidelines for metro projects. DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan said metro rail was on track to complete Phase-II by October 2010 and has already submitted a blueprint to the Delhi Government for Metro Phase III consisting of 120 km. He expressed hope of getting clearances from the Government so that Phase III can be started before Phase II is completed. This, he said, will help the organisation utilise its present resources such as employees and contractors. Dr. Sreedharan said about 37 km would be added to the metro network by the end of this year. The Indraprastha-Yamuna Bank section will open on May 10, Yamuna Bank-NOIDA in August, Inderlok-Mundka in September and Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar in December 2009. The DMRC also declared the Barakhamba Road metro station as the ‘Best Metro Station’ and Rajesh Kumar Sharma, Group Station Manager, Rajiv Chowk, won the ‘Metro Man of the Year (2008-09)’ award for his outstanding professional. The DMRC also instituted a new award this year for best contractor with regard to safety performance. The first Safety Shield was presented to Metro Tunneling Group, a joint venture of DYWIDAG – L&T – SAMSUNG – IRCON – SHIMIZU. Twenty-one other metro employees were awarded for outstanding performance in their respective areas of work.
