AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa admitting cadres from other parties during an election campaign in Tiruchi on Sunday. — TIRUCHI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa has appealed to the people to support her alliance to reverse the economic slow down that has “affected all sections of people.” Campaigning for her party candidate here on Sunday, she said the administrative inefficiency of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre was the reason for the economic slowdown. The people of Tamil Nadu had not got any benefit over the past five years. Terrorism had grown in the country and unemployment was rampant. The DMK, by backing the government at the Centre, was also responsible for the state of affairs, Ms. Jayalalithaa said. She termed a bundle of contradictions the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu. In the past, DMK president M. Karunanidhi had heaped abuses on former Congress Chief Ministers K. Kamaraj and S. Bhaktavatchalam. He had also raised allegations against former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the Bofors case. Yet the Congress had joined hands with the DMK. Though the Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had said that he could not forget the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, he had described his party’s ties with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi as a strategic alliance. “The alliance is bereft of any ideology and is totally opportunistic,” she observed. Though Mr. Karunanidhi wielded enormous clout over the Union government, he was not interested in protecting the rights of Tamil Nadu. He was only keen on promoting his family interests, she alleged. The AIADMK was committed to upholding the rights of the State and it would take all necessary steps to revive the economy, waive all agricultural loans, increase agriculture production, create employment opportunities and overcome the power shortage in the State. “You have the opportunity to write a new history in the State,” she told the crowd and appealed to them to strengthen her hands so that she could fulfil the promises. Earlier, Ms. Jayalalithaa campaigned for party candidate M. Thambidurai in Karur.
