A photographic tribute to Russian Parliament

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A unique photo exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of the establishment of the First Russian Parliament (State Duma) opened here this past week. Titled “The history of Russian parliamentary system”, the exhibition organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Unity International Foundation emphasised the significance of parliamentary democracy.

The Unity International Foundation felicitated Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and posthumously honoured the veteran freedom fighter and seasoned parliamentarian Chaudhury Ranbir Singh Hooda with the Unity Award for their outstanding contribution.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda received the award on behalf of his late father.

Inaugurating the week-long photo exhibition, Mr. Chatterjee said “India and Russia might have adopted two different political systems, but there was a strong convergence of our ultimate goals and objectives”.

“Parliament, as the fulcrum of that inclusive edifice, stands supreme, articulating the hopes and aspirations of our people,” he added. Stating that the younger generation should be inspired to know more about its democratic and parliamentary heritage, the Speaker said then only can it internalise the cherished values of democracy.

Mr. Chatterjee lauded the contributions of Chaudhury Ranbir Singh Hooda and thanked the Unity International Foundation for the Unity Award conferred on him.

Mr. Hooda said his father had enhanced the socio-economic status of the peasantry and weaker section of society.

RCSC Director Fyodor A. Rozovskiy described the photo exhibition as an event of paramount importance being organised within the framework of the Year of India in Russia.

He traced the background of the State Duma and its evolutionary development from imperial Russia to the Russian Federation. “The State Duma in Russia is the Lower House of the Federal Assembly of Russia (Parliament), the Upper House being the Federation Council of Russia,” he added.
