dated May 5, 1959: Tiruvanaikoil temple

The stone roofing of the “Kolu mantap” (durbar hall) in the famous Tiruvanaikoil temple near Tiruchirapalli, collapsed on May 3. Twelve stone slabs, each measuring twenty feet long and one foot broad, came down smashing up the artistic wooden decorative “Peetam” where the idol of the Goddess ‘Akhilandeswari’ is usually installed for Navarathri (Dasara) celebrations.
