Un-Islamic: U.K. Muslims

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: British Muslims have denounced attacks on Sikhs in Pakistan’s Taliban-held tribal regions and the attempts to impose jaziya (a tax on non-Muslims) on the community as “un-Islamic” and “shameful.”

The Council of Indian Muslims (U.K.) quoted Islamic scholars as saying such actions were against the teachings of Islam. “It is highly deplorable, unacceptable and un-Islamic,” said Maulana Atiqur-Rehman Sambhali, a widely respected Deoband scholar.

Mohammad Munaf Zeena, council chairman, said such behaviour amounted to “ethnic cleansing” and was “extremely shameful.” “Those who are committing such outrageous acts do not seem to have the slightest idea of the Shariah,” he said.
