Corporations reverse fare reduction

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Following the directive of the Election Commission, State transport corporations in Tamil Nadu on Monday withdrew the reduction in bus fares.

The reversal of the reduction in fares was communicated to conductors orally, according to an official. The original decision to reduce fares was conveyed to transport corporation employees orally on Thursday.

The fare reduction was widely seen as an election-eve attempt by the ruling party to woo voters, and had led to widespread protests by Opposition parties. The Election Commission took suo motu notice of this violation of the Model Code of Conduct and had asked Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi to reverse the cut in fares.
