CHENNAI: Around 1,35,000 seats in 41 disciplines in B.E and B.Tech courses will be available for students in Tamil Nadu engineering colleges in 2009 with 85,000 seats to be allotted through counselling, conducted by Anna University, according to P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, Chennai. Speaking to the press here on Tuesday, Dr. Jawahar said forms for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) along with an information booklet on the different colleges would be distributed starting Wednesday, May 6. Nearly 1.5 lakh forms had been printed and most of them distributed to 58 designated counters all over the State, he added. The dates for counselling had not been decided but rankings would be ready by June 20 and counselling would follow soon after medical counselling, he said. In all, 354 colleges, including 333 self-financing colleges, 11 university colleges, and 10 government and government-aided colleges, would be included in the counselling process. One hundred and forty colleges had applied for approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) this year, he said. Based on the AICTE’s approval, a further 25,000 seats may be added, Dr. Jawahar said. No cut-off date had been fixed for including a college in the counselling process and even if a college obtained approval in the middle of the counselling process, Anna University would issue a provisional affiliation and include it in the process, he said. When asked if this might lead to colleges with insufficient infrastructure being included in the counselling, Dr. Jawahar said the AICTE was undertaking a thorough study before approval. Since the affiliation process by Anna University took a week or so, the university would provide affiliation where possible, while the others would be included with provisional affiliation. A prospectus of the 354 colleges was available online. Students could obtain the forms from the website www.annauniv.edu/tnea2009 or by post or directly from counters set up by the university. The counters would be open on all days from May 6 to May 30, except on Sundays, May 12, May 13 (election day) and May 16 (counting day), between 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. General applicants will have to pay Rs. 500 for the form, while the fee is Rs. 250 for SC/ST candidates. At the counters, payment could be made by cash or by Demand Draft, while Rs. 200 should be added to the application fee if applied by post. All Demand Drafts, drawn on any nationalised bank, are to be addressed to “The Director, Admissions, Anna University, Chennai” and should be payable at Chennai. All applications should be addressed to (if sent by post) “The Secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2009, Anna University, Chennai, Chennai – 600 025” and should reach the address by 5.30 p.m. on May 31. In the case of SC/ST candidates, a Xerox copy of the community certificate should be brought at the time of buying an application.
