THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Residents Associations, Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has submitted a memorandum to the government, highlighting the need for a public transport system to resolve traffic congestion in the capital city. The memorandum identifies the lack of bus bays as one of the primary reasons for the traffic congestion. It proposes the construction of bus bays at a distance of 50 metres from major junctions. The federation has called for making the private bus stand at Attakulangara and the KSRTC bus terminal at Eenchakkal operational at the earliest. Another proposal is to construct parking towers on BOT basis near major junctions. The memorandum urges the government to create new parking space by covering the canal at East Fort. FRAT has also demanded widening of the Karamana-Neyyatinkara-Parassala highway to accommodate six-lane traffic. It proposed a coastal suburban train service linking Attingal, Nedumangad, Neyyatinkara and Vizhinjam and a ring road network to ease the traffic bottlenecks in the area. The federation recommended a change in the bus route from Palayam to East Fort. The memorandum also proposed the construction of underpasses at the Spencer junction and Pulimoodu and flyovers at the VJT Hall junction, East Fort and Medical College junction to streamline traffic flow.
