Campaigning ends in Srinagar

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: As a 50-hour strike call given by separatists began on Tuesday evening, the authorities are bracing themselves to ensure incident-free elections in the Srinagar parliamentary constituency which goes to the polls in the fourth phase on May 7. The campaigning ended on Tuesday. Following the attack on a former National Conference activist on Sunday night in downtown Srinagar, the police have stepped up security. Informed sources said 180 additional companies of the Central Reserve Police Force were being deployed, in addition to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Disturbed over recent militant strikes, the authorities are trying to keep them at a bay on polling day. Srinagar has virtually turned into a garrison town with all sensitive areas being looked at by the CRPF. Frisking of vehicles and surprise checks have been intensified. “We are taking adequate measures…,” said a senior police officer, adding that only those people going to vote would be allowed to move about. Out of 1,483 polling stations in the constituency, 665 are declared hyper-sensitive.

To deal with the boycott, the separatist leaders have been put under house arrest until after the elections. Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik are already under house arrest for the past 10 days. Mr. Geelani gave the 50-hour strike call. People are preparing for a “long holiday” and will prefer to stay indoors. Observers believe the turnout in Srinagar will be low. After Anantnag, Srinagar is the largest parliamentary constituency going to the polls in the Kashmir division. Voting here is on May 7. In the Baramulla and Ladakh constituencies, polling will be on May 13 in the fifth and final phase.
