Polling at 15,000 feet
Sujay Mehdudia
With the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) working overtime to open the gateway to the majestic Lahaul-Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh, election officials are hopeful that polling parties will be able to reach Hikkam, the highest polling station in the State at an elevation of over 15,000 ft. It is located in the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency where former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is pitted against Maheshwar Singh of the BJP.
Interestingly, the polling booth at Hikkam, located somewhere beyond the snowbound Bara Bangal mountains, has 321 voters. Although officials have made arrangements for flying polling parties to Hikkam from Mandi, they hope that the Rohtang pass will open in time for vehicular traffic. In all, there are 43 polling stations in the State that are located at a distance of 10 km or more from the nearest road head.
Besides the 7,251 main polling stations, two auxiliary polling stations are being set up for the four Lok Sabha seats scheduled to go to polls on May 13. As many as 1,259 stations had been declared as sensitive, while 708 stations had been classified as hyper-sensitive to ensure free and fair elections. The maximum number of hyper-sensitive polling stations is 197 in Kangra district. The Mandi constituency had the highest number of polling stations (1,921), including an auxiliary station in the Jogindernagar Assembly segment.
Officials said the State had been divided into 706 sectors to be manned by senior officials. The State Election Commission, as per the directions of the Election Commission of India, carried out a review of the total number of polling stations leading to an increase of 1,019 stations from the 6,232 stations in 2004 polls.
