Putting IT To use: : Minister for Education M.A. Baby inaugurating a training programme in free software for Kudumbasree units in city on Tuesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State should aim at achieving hundred per cent literacy in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) using free software platforms, Minister for Education M.A. Baby has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a State-level free-software training programme for Kudumbasree IT units organised by the IT@School project in the city on Tuesday.

“The goal should be seen as a continuation of our successful literacy mission programme,” Mr. Baby said.

The State, with a favourable gender ratio, is comfortably placed in realising this goal than any other State, he said. “Women play a decisive role in materialising this long-term vision because the empowerment of women benefits society as a whole,” Mr. Baby said.

Nearly 665 members, in 20-45 age group, selected from 87 Kudumbasree units are currently being trained under the five-day programme. The programme will be held in other districts as well.

Kudumbasree Mission Executive Director Sarada Muraleedharan, who presided over the inaugural session, said utilising IT as a tool for poverty alleviation was a novel concept.

Most of the skills which Kudumbasree members pick up are learnt on the job.

The members are assigned a lot of government work including digitisation of ration cards, police records and registration works.

During the programme, participants will be trained in open office, Malayalam computing, graphic software and installation.

There will also be separate sessions on web designing, trouble shooting and hardware training.

The inaugural session was also attended by Anwar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School Project.
