SIT chief calls on Gujarat CJ
Manas Dasgupta
R.K. Raghavan
GANDHINAGAR: Chairman of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team R.K. Raghavan called on Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court K.S. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday to discuss with him setting up of six fast track courts for trial of the 2002 communal riots cases.
Four senior judges of the High Court were also present at the meeting between the SIT chairman and Mr. Justice Radhakrishnan. High Court sources said the Chief Justice had assured Mr. Raghavan of early steps to comply with the directions of the Supreme Court to set up fast track courts.
Earlier Mr. Raghavan discussed the progress in the inquiry of the riot-related cases with the SIT members.
Later Mr. Raghavan told journalists that all necessary steps would be taken to protect witnesses in the riot-related cases.
He, however, declined to give any information on the progress made in the investigation of the 10 cases entrusted to the SIT for re-investigation and said its report would be submitted only to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court lifted the ban on the trial of the 2002 riot cases last week but rejected the demand of the human rights activists to hold the trial outside Gujarat.
SIT sources said Mr. Raghavan had come this time for finalising arrangements with the High Court for the setting up of the fast track courts. The hearing on the bail applications of the former Minister, Mayaben Kodnani, and VHP leader Jaideep Patel has been postponed till May 7.
