dated May 7, 1959: NASA’s plans

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on May 6 it had awarded a 33,500,000 dollar contract to the General Dynamics’ Convair Division for rockets to explore the Moon and the planets. The contract covers the design construction, testing and launching of powerful Vega space rockets. It calls for the building of eight Vegas by the end of 1961.
