Maoists kill liquor trader in Kandhamal district

Staff Reporter

Combing operation launched to nab the extremists

BERHAMPUR: Maoists murdered a liquor trader and beat up his two sons at Gaspanga village under Brahmanigaon police station in Kandhamal district on Wednesday night.

The naxals dragged out the liquor trader Laluka Behera Majhi (50) from his house along with his two sons.

According to eye witnesses 11 armed naxals including a woman cadre had reached the village for this violent act at around midnight. This remote village is located in Kandhamal district near border of Gajapati district. Laluka was allegedly involved in illegal liquor trading in the area. Laluka and his two sons Papura Behera Majhi, Gaura Behera Majhi were dragged into the nearby jungle. Papura and Gaura were ruthlessly beaten up.

Naxals asked the two sons to go and call up four other persons from near by villages. When they left the spot, the Maoists slit open the throat of Laluka to kill him. The body of Laluka was left on the road near the Gaspanga village.

Threat posters

Through posters left at the spot the naxals threatened the liquor traders of the area to stop their illegal trade or face consequences like the slain man.

One of the two sons of Laluka returned back in the morning. The other son had not returned back till afternoon. A police team reached the spot and has started investigation into the case. Combing operation has also been launched to nab the extremists in the nearby jungles. It may be noted that Laluka had received threats from naxals several times in the past. In January he was allegedly attacked and beaten up by some naxals.

Through this murder naxals are trying to increase their support base in the area by projecting them as social reformers. It was also a challenge of Maoists to the heavy presence of security forces in Kandhamal district.

Despite the so called high security by the central forces on March 19, 2009 Prabhat Panigrahi, an RSS activist was killed by Maoists at Rudiguma village in Kandhamal district.

Panigrahi was among the 14 persons in the hit list prepared by the naxals after the communal violence in Kandhamal district last year.
