MUMBAI: The ninth round of the 2nd Mumbai Mayors Cup international open chess tournament saw Koneru Humpy winning to share the second spot with Evgeny Miroshnichenko, Deepan Chakkravarthy and Magesh Chandran at the Goregaon Sports Club. Alexander Areshchenko agreed to a draw in 19 moves and retains the top spot in the 11-round event. Chakkravarthy and Magesh Chandran drew in 17 moves of an English opening game, exchanging three minor pieces along the way. GM Humpy opened with the Queens pawn, Suvrajit Saha responded with the Dutch defence. Saha gave up his black rook for white bishop to stop Humpy’s attack on the 21st move. He could have resigned on the 44th move. India’s IM Vikramaditya Kamble (2351), playing with white, surprised Bangladesh’s GM Zia-ur-Rehman in 43 moves in a Pirc defence game. The results: Ninth round: Evgeny Miroshnichenko (Ukr) 7.5 drew with Alexander Areshchenko (Ukr) 8; Deepan Chakkravarthy 7.5 drew with P. Magesh Chandran 7.5; Vladimir Belov (Rus) 7 drew with Shukrat Safin (Uzb) 7. Koneru Humpy 7.5 bt Suvrajit Saha 6.5; Georgy Timoshenko (Ukr) 7 drew with Andrei Deviatkin (Rus) 7. Petr Kostenko (Kaz) 7 drew with Akash Thakur 7; Yaroslav Zinchenko Yaroslav (Ukr) 7 bt Shashikant Kutwal 6; Vikramaditya Kamble 7 bt Zia-ur-Rehman 6. Saidali Iuldachev (Uzb) 7 bt Swapnil Dhopade 6; Sudhakar Babu 6.5 drew with Alexander Fominhy (Rus) 6.5.
