Chargers rides on Rohit’s heroics

HAT-TRICK BOY: After a decent stint with the bat, Rohit Sharma (third from left) turned his arm over with exciting results for Deccan Chargers on Wednesday.

Centurion: Rohit Sharma scored a breezy 38 and then followed it up with four wickets including a hat-trick to guide Deccan Chargers to a 19-run victory over Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match here on Wednesday.

Rohit shone with both the bat and ball, making a crucial 38 off 36 deliveries and then scalped four wickets giving away six runs in his two overs to bring back the Hyderabad outfit’s campaign back on track after three successive defeats.

Chasing a modest target of 146 Mumbai Indians could manage only 126 for eight in its 20 overs.

J.P. Duminy waged a lone battle and scored a fighting 52.

Earlier, Rohit struck a sensible 38, while Y. Venugopala Rao chipped in with with a quickfire 28 to guide Deccan Chargers to 145 for six.

Deadly blows

Mumbai Indians was dealt two early blows by Deccan Chargers left-arm pacer R.P. Singh (two for 19), who claimed the crucial wickets of Sanath Jaysuriya and Sachin Tendulkar in his opening and the innings second over.

Jayasuriya was the first to depart, brilliantly caught at third man by Ryan Harris. As if that was not enough, R.P. Singh removed Tendulkar off his next ball, cleaning the master blaster with a delivery that came in after pitching to see the Mumbai outfit struggling at seven for two. — PTI
