Belgaum
Belgaum: The Security Guards and Labour Union, which represents security guards and non-clinical staff at the Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) and the District Civil Hospital in the city, has sought suspension of two officials working at BIMS and the civil hospital for allegedly threatening some union members. The union members led by president A.D. Ankalgi staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Friday. They alleged that the two officials, including the Chief Administrative Officer of BIMS, had threatened to sack some workers if they continued to be members of the union. He said some of the security guards and non-clinical staff had been sacked just because they sought wages as per the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. The members of the union submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in March in this regard. The workers requested the administration of the hospital and BIMS to give labour contract only to those contractors or agencies that extended benefits such as PF, ESI, overtime wage, gratuity, etc., as per the Act.
