Irrigation department to fund cleaning

Kozhikode: A meeting of the Canoly Canal Development Samithi here on Friday has decided to start speedboat service on the canal from Karaparamba to the Sarovaram park site in September this year.

Silt in the estuary area of the canal will be removed prior to the launch of the service. Waste and mud accumulated at various points on the proposed stretch will be removed with immediate effect.

The de-silting and other cleaning work will be funded by the Irrigation department.

The meeting, chaired by the District Collector P.B. Salim, also decided to form a sub-committee to sort out issues related to pollution of the canal water.

The sub-committee has been entrusted with talking to the people concerned and firms that drain waste water into the canal and taking immediate measures to put an end to the practice.

Samithi vice-chairman C. Janardhanan, secretary A. Viswanathan, joint secretary Kunhoth Aboobacker and member Vatsan Nellikode, among others, attended the meeting.
