APSHRC orders ban on hide trade

HYDERABAD: The A.P. State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) has directed the A.P. Meat Development Corporation (APMDC) to prevent any type of hides, skins or other waste material from being processed within the GHMC area.

And the GHMC has been specifically told not to issue any licences for skin or hide processing activities anywhere except near the abattoir where separate sheds can be constructed. “There shall be strict surveillance against carrying of hides and skins into the city and after processing, the hides and skins shall be carried to the respective tanneries,” they said.

In the orders passed on Friday, after it took up hearing on the Bholakpur incident from all the parties concerned, SHRC Chairman B. Subhashan Reddy and Member E. Ismail stated that no hides or skins should be permitted to be carried from the Chengicherla abattoir in Ghatkesar for processing to any place other than an identified spot at the abattoir. The Commission called for a coordinated action by the APMDC, GHMC as well as the police in the implementation of the orders. Any violation would be dealt with sternly holding the officials and staff responsible. It said, pure air to breathe and potable water to drink were the two primary human rights and it was the State’s responsibility and all its agencies concerned to see that these are protected.

While noting that the analytical reports of the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) was yet to be filed, the Commission asked officials to ensure the water being supplied through tankers is not stored in drums but into the consumers’ containers.
