HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday wondered whether there was a government in the State, citing the outbreak of cholera in the city and charged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with being “ineligible” to hold the high post.

Addressing TDP functionaries of Nellore and West Godavari districts as part of the constituency-wise review of the party’s electoral performance, he said that cholera was never heard of earlier in the State. The government was also not bothered about solving acute drinking water problem or ensuring Minimum Support Price to paddy farmers. Referring to the fire in Secretariat, he said Dr. Reddy was touring when files were burning and faulted the government for not briefing opposition parties about the incident.

Expressing confidence that TDP would return to power, he said those who worked for the party’s electoral success would get due recognition and encouragement.

He told the functionaries attending the review meeting to provide an assessment of the performance of the key 30 leaders in each constituency.

He sought to know whether the party benefited by their work and if the goodwill was converted into votes. Though the party had fought many elections, this kind of detailed review was being taken up for the first time. He said attempts by TDP’s rivals to lure the workers through inducements did not succeed. “We are winning because of the sacrifices made by the party workers,” he added. There was also resentment against the government for failing to control price rise and corruption.

At the national level, there would be polarisation after the election results and the third alternative would form the government at the Centre.

Mr. Naidu also held a similar meeting with party leaders of Visakhapatnam Urban and Srikakulam districts later.
