First name ‘Urdu’
Raktima Bose KOLKATA
The Left thinks the ad misleads people
“My name is not Sudip Bandopadhyay, but Urdu Bandopadhyay” — this is the opening line of an advertisement published in a local Urdu daily newspaper on behalf of the Trinamool Congress candidate from the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency.
The ad goes on to say that Mr. Bandopadhyay is “fond of this sweet and lovely language” and is “committed to making it the second official language of West Bengal as stated in the party’s election manifesto.”
The advertisement has the Left parties seeing red because, according to them, the State Government had already issued an executive order to the effect in 1981 that Urdu be officially recognised in blocks where Urdu-speaking people comprise over 10 per cent of the population, though it has not been fully implemented.
A press statement released on behalf of the constituency’s Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate, Md. Salim, stated that the Trinamool Congress and Mr. Bandopadhyay are trying to mislead people over the issue by sensationalising it.
