Thiruvananthapuram: The police, on Saturday, arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the murder of Abdul Karim, 70, at Vallakadavu. The police identified the suspect as S. Siad, who was living together with the victim’s granddaughter, a minor girl. The police and the local people had fished out Karim’s headless body from the Parvathi Puthanar canal, near Vallakadavu, early on Friday. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shanghumughom, C.G. Suresh Kumar said Karim was staying with his granddaughter and Siad in a shanty on the banks of the canal near the Vallakadavu Boat House. The Vallakadavu Muslim Jama-at had turned down Siad’s request to legitimise his marriage with Karim’s granddaughter. Karim had arrived at Siad’s house on Thursday afternoon to spend an evening with his granddaughter’s family. Around the same time, a fight broke out between the couple and the woman left for her mother’s house fearing her husband’s fiery temper. The police suspect Siad to have beheaded Abdul Karim in a drunken fury when he objected to the manner in which the youth treated his granddaughter. The police said Siad’s sister raised the alarm in the hutment colony at 2.30 a.m. when she saw her brother dragging the man’s body, wrapped in a thin mattress, towards the bank of the heavily silted canal. The neighbours informed the police and local community leaders. The police said Siad was a butcher by profession. They searched the heavily silted canal on Saturday for Karim’s head in the presence of the accused and a large crowd of local people. The suspect is currently in judicial custody.
