Reservoir levels low

Special Correspondent

It is now 67 % of last year’s storage

NEW DELHI: The combined live storage in 81 reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission was 18 per cent of the designed capacity on April 30. Last year, at the beginning of the monsoon, it was 19 per cent.

The CWC monitors 81 reservoirs, of which 36 have significant hydro-power benefits with installed capacities of more than 60 MW each.

The present water storage is 67 per cent of last year’s storage and 90 per cent of last 10 years’ average storage during the same period. In 42 reservoirs, this year’s storage is 80 per cent or less than the average of the previous 10 years. In the remaining 39 reservoirs, the storage is more than 80 per cent of the average of the previous 10 years.

The storage in four basins — Indus, Narmada, Rivers of Kutch, and in the west flowing rivers of South — is better than the average of the previous 10 years.

The Ganga, the Tapi, the Mahi, the Cauvery and neighbouring east flowing rivers and Krishna basins were flowing close to normal while the Godavari, the Mahanadi and neighbouring east flowing rivers and the Sabarmati were deficient, the water commission said.

Crop strategies

To derive the best possible benefits from the available water, the CWC is in touch with the Departments of Agriculture and Co-operation and provides them information about the weekly storage position for evolving suitable crop strategies.
