Letters to the Editor
It is shocking that a democracy like India can even think of encouraging the army chief of a neighbouring country to defy a duly elected Prime Minister and his Cabinet, notwithstanding the lack of political consensus ("India's Nepal policy in disarray," May 7). Will it not set a bad precedent and send wrong signals to the vested interests in our country? Are we still in the grip of the decadent feudal royalty, which moved heaven and earth in conjunction with one of our regressive political parties to preserve a theocratic Hindu state in Nepal? Our civil society should mobilise support to pressure the next government to lay off the internal affairs of Nepal. Kasim Sait, Chennai The current scenario in our country and the neighbourhood calls for a mature response from our polity. All our neighbours are in the midst of some political turmoil. Internally, we are facing a severe economic downturn. It may get aggravated if the election throws up a hung parliament. It will, therefore, be advisable on the part of all political parties to consider a national government at the Centre with as wide a consensual representation as possible. This alone seems to be the way out of the multiple crises the nation faces now. Shahabuddin Nadeem, Bangalore
