Hindraf leaders to be freed in Malaysia

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Three leaders of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force are among those to be released by the Malaysian authorities. With this, all five leaders of Hindraf, held without charges and trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA), will be at liberty again.

They were detained in December 2007 following their proactive roles in organising a mass rally in Kuala Lumpur in November.

Along with Hindraf chairman P. Waytha Moorthy, now in self-imposed exile, they were launching a campaign against the “marginalisation” of the minority ethnic Indians in Malaysia.

Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said in Putrajaya on Friday the Hindraf leaders “are no longer a threat to the country.” The Hindraf leaders now being set free are P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, and K. Vasanthakumar. Mr. V. Ganapathi Rao (also known as Ganabatirau), and R. Kengadharan were released last month.
