Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Successful Independent candidates in the Lok Sabha elections can play a catalytic role in making the country to overcome social challenges, said E.Sarath Babu, an Independent candidate contesting from the South Chennai Lok Sabha constituency.

Speaking at the launch of a journal ‘Maattram’ here on Saturday by 5th Pillar, a non-governmental organisation with the aim of fighting corruption, he said, “As the new government has the responsibility of creating an atmosphere suitable for managing the impact of global economic recession, young Members of Parliament with better education and integrity can contribute better.”

A.K.Venkatasubramaniam of Catalyst Trust said, “People with competence, courage and compassion have to make democracy in our country vibrant.”

People have to internalise the spirit of law-making and make effective use of voting rights, he said. Voters should understand the normal process of law-making better to know the abnormalities in legislation. This would help the voters think better and exercise their voting rights well, he added.

The Citizens’ Alliance for Good Governance distributed 10,000 copies of a ‘Guide to Voters.’
