Yadav’s call to Nepal’s parties

KATHMANDU: After the political parties of the Constituent Assembly failed to form a government of consensus, President Ram Baran Yadav on Sunday asked them to form a government of majority.

To form a majority government, the parties need 301 seats. The Maoists have 238 seats, the Nepali Congress has 114 and the CPN-UML and the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum have 109 and 53 respectively. The Maoists have been obstructing the House after Mr. Yadav reinstated Army Chief General Rookmangud Katawal sacked by the Maoist-led government. They have been demanding the withdrawal of his decision.

Meanwhile, the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress on Sunday agreed to request the Maoists to allow the House proceedings take place. The UML has already announced that it is ready to lead the next government, with official nomination of Madhav Kumar Nepal as the prime ministerial candidate.

The Madhesi Forum, on the other hand, has maintained it will support any party that supports the Madhesh issues.
