Murali (third from left), Managing Director, The Hindu. CHENNAI: Dr. Boaz team, comprising of P.D. Boaz, P. Sridharan, Uttam Gupta, J.M. Shah and N.R. Kirubakaramurthy, won the prestigious Team of Four title in the T. Nagar Social Club open bridge tournament at the Club premises here on Sunday. Abhinav team finished second while Farias and Ryan Express emerged joint third. Team Boaz took home Rs. 27,000, Farias Rs. 19,000 and the third-placed team received Rs. 10,000. The tournament consisted of Rs. 1, 20,000 as prize money, the largest in South India. ‘Great leveller’Speaking at the prize distribution function, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, praised the office bearers of the club, which is celebrating its diamond jubilee year, for their efforts in popularising the sport. Describing bridge as a ‘great leveller’, Mr. Murali said it was a sport where people from different backgrounds and avocations took part. “It (the sport) is a way of bringing people together,” he said. Mr. Murali said bridge had educational value compared to many other sports. He said bridge was for younger players and not for older people as perceived. “The myth should be exploded,” said Mr. Murali. “It’s time bridge is given its due prominence, ” he added. K.R. Venkataraman, a prominent player who has represented India several times, was felicitated. Vijay Shankar (13 years), the youngest participant in the TNSC Open tournament, was given a memento. P. Narayana Iyer, Secretary, Chennai District Bridge Association, proposed a vote of thanks. Other results: Team of Four: 2. Abhinav (R. Venkatesh, Arvind Srinivasan, R. Sreekrishnan, D. Vijay); 3. Farias (P.J. Faria, K.M. Sainathan, Ajay Yadnik, C.D. Kumar) and Ryan Express (Sherien Ryan, Sri Varghese, S. Vijayaraghavan, Farooq Dadabhov, Prajwal, Sunil Verghese). Pairs Howell: 1.
