dated May 12, 1959: Tempo of production

A note of warning that the country cannot afford to slacken in any way the tempo of production and if they did so, it would be like “trying to take rest while swimming across a big stream”, was made by Prime Minister Nehru when he intervened to address the A.I.C.C. session in New Delhi on May 11. Pointing out that it had been calculated that if they increased production by two per cent they “will be just able to keep their heads above water,” Mr. Nehru said that if they increased it by six per cent they would be able to provide the basic amenities for all the people taking into account the increasing population.
