Customs officers strike gold at BIA

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Officials of the Customs Department on Monday caught two persons at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) who were allegedly bringing gold worth Rs. 29 lakh without valid documents. According to Customs officials, Gohil Kiritsinh Keshrjibhai (36) of Ahmedabad and Syed Allah Baksh (39) of Bangalore arrived by a private airline from Dubai. A team of Bangalore Custom’s Headquarters Preventive Unit caught the two while they were passing through the green channel. This channel is used by passengers who are carrying material for which Customs Duty is not payable. The officials said Keshjibhai and Baksh had gone on visitors’ visa to Tanzania a week ago. They purchased gold dust in Tanzania and came to the city via Dubai. They wanted to avoid imposition of Customs Duty on the gold dust and then sell it to local jewellers. The officials kept a track on their movement and caught them at the BIA.
