dated May 13, 1959: Institute at Guindy

The Buildings and Works Committee of the Southern Higher Technological Institute, which met in Madras on May 10, approved the “Master Plan” for the Institute buildings, hostels and staff quarters, to be constructed at the Guindy campus of the Institute. Constituting what may be called an “academic township” spread over 600 acres, it would include main buildings for the institute, laboratories, workshops, hostels for students and residential quarters for the staff. Five years hence when the institute, which is the third in the chain of the four higher technological institutes that the Central Government were setting up, will be in full swing, the township will be completely established. According to plan finally chalked out now, the construction of a part of the institute buildings and six workshops to house the equipment, which would be shortly arriving from Germany, would be immediately taken up and finished in a year. Hostels for undergraduate students and officers will also be constructed.
