Brothers in the fray

Indrani Dutta

Mr. Tathagata Roy, 60, member of the BJP national executive, is the senior in a family of four brothers of whom two are in politics. He finds himself locked in a stiff battle in Kolkata Uttar where he faces Md. Salim of the CPI(M) and Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress.

Mr. Saugata Roy is an old associate of Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and has been with her through thick and thin. Till she was with the National Democratic Alliance, the brothers were comrades-in-arm on the political field. Mr. Saugata Roy is the Trinamool candidate from Dumdum constituency, where he takes on Amitava Nandi of the CPI(M).

Erudition goes with both the brothers, who have law degrees in addition to being post-graduates. Mr. Tathagata Roy is an engineer who took voluntary retirement from a very senior position with the Calcutta Metro Railways in 1990. He joined the BJP and teaches at the Jadavpur University. Mr. Saugata Roy is an MLA and a former Minister.

Political differences have not driven a wedge in the relations between the two. They do break bread together at family gatherings when they leave their political ideologies and arguments outside the door.
