Prem Kumar stuns Om Dalvi, enters last eight

BANGALORE: J. Thomas Prem Kumar of Tamil Nadu pulled off the first upset of the tournament when he knocked out the fourth-seeded Om Dalvi of Maharashtra 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and entered the boys’ under-18 singles quarterfinals of the AITA Champion Series (under-18 & under-16) junior tennis championship here on Tuesday.

Prem Kumar was joined in the last eight by Rashien Samuel, who defeated Monish Rajer of Tamil Nadu 6-2, 6-1, and the top seed Saurabh Dilip Patel. The latter accounted for Rohan Gaonkar 6-3, 6-3.

Patel also defeated Rohan Gaonkar in the under-16 event 7-6(3), 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Preethi progresses

In the girls’ section, the local girl Preethi Gokhale entered the quarterfinals of both the under-18 and under-16 sections.
