ABVP stages protest against stabbing of a student

MANGALORE: Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday to protest against the alleged stabbing of a student at Gurupura on Saturday evening.

They urged the district administration to arrest the guilty at the earliest.

The parishad would intensify the agitation, if the authorities failed to do so, the protesters said.Srinidhi Hegde, member, national executive of ABVP, alleged that a few motocycle-bound people stabbed Suvratraj Shetty, a final year B.A. student of Besant Evening College here, at Gurupura on Saturday at about 9.45 p.m..

Bajpe police had registered a case in this connection following a complaint lodged by the victim, who was a member of the parishad. Mr. Suvratraj Shetty was admitted to a private hospital here and was undergoing treatment. As a result of the injury, Mr. Suratraj could not appear for an examination on Monday being conducted by the Mangalure Universigty, he said.

Mr. Srinidhi Hegde alleged that some people were trying to disturb communal harmony in society at a time when students under Mangalore University were facing examinations. Harish Poonja, ABVP pramukh, Santosh Reddy, its city organising secretary, spoke.

They submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj. In the memorandum, the protesters urged the official to initiate action against the guilty at the earliest.
