Water quality being monitored in N. Andhra civic bodies

Staff Reporter

Random samples at tap points are being taken daily to test whether mandated chlorination levels are maintained

VISAKHAPATNAM: Officials of the Municipal Administration Department are monitoring the water quality in the north coastal districts in the wake of reports of water contamination at Bholakpur in Hyderabad resulting in cholera outbreak.

The periodic chlorination of reservoirs, forming of teams at municipality level and finding out the leaks are some of the tasks assigned by the Municipal Administration top brass. “So far no reports of anything being amiss have been received,” Regional Joint Director of Municipal Administration P. Asha Jyothi told The Hindu. She had visited Bhimunipatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram municipalities for first hand inspection.

Random samples at tap points are being taken daily to test whether mandated chlorination levels are being maintained. At the tap point the chlorination should test 0.2 ppm. The samples are also tested every month. There is no dearth of chlorine in the 11 municipalities in the north coastal districts. Even the mixing (of chlorine) has become easier as the liquid form is being used.

Water shortage

However, some of the municipalities are going through an acute water shortage. At Ichchapuram, water is being supplied once in three days. At Bobbili and Vizianagaram, the supply is on alternate days.

The situation at Srikakulam is better with supply twice a day.

Bhimili is also facing a severe shortage and the municipal water is provided once in three days. Regular supply is being maintained by pressing into service 15 tankers and drawing water from private and infiltration wells.
