VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has received Green Tech Foundation Award for effective implementation of safety systems in port operations. Of all Indian ports, The VPT is the only port, which won the Green Tech Safety Award 2009 in the service sector. The award was presented during the recently held eighth annual global safety and security conference at Goa. S.M. Mumford, Chief Mechanical Engineer and A. Venkata Ramana, Port Safety Officer, received the award from Kamaleswara Sharon, president of Green Tech Foundation. The specialist committee of the Green Tech Foundation has carried out a national level statistical survey in 2008 on the implementation of safety standard regulations and best practices at worksites to avert accidents by both the private and public sector industries. Safety standardsThe safety standards followed while handling various cargoes, hazardous cargoes like LPG oils, chemicals and for the best safety practices introduced in port operations to achieve loss control were scrutinised by the Green Tech Foundation committee. VPT was adjudged as the best among the Indian ports. VPT had earlier won the prestigious award for ‘Performance Year 2008.’
