Plethora of goals

KOCHI: The AFC Vision India Project’s Kerala State under-13 Schools Football League was off to a roaring start with a shower of goals at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Tuesday.

A.T. Arshad scored thrice as Malappuram’s Mampad Government VHSS blanked Kozhikode’s St. Joseph’s 6-0 and a little later K. A. Arun fired in four as Kannur’s K. P. R. Gopalan Memorial Government HSS (Kallissery) thrashed Pathanamthitta’s St. John’s HSS (Eraviperoor) 8-0 in the morning.

The talented Akshay Joshi struck both the goals for Ernakulam’s Sacred Heart HSS (Thevara) which defeated Thrissur’s Chalakudy GVHSS 2-1 later in the evening. In all, 17 goals flowed in from three matches.

Vyalar Ravi, the Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, inaugurated the league and Kerala Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar presided over the opening function while Olympian O.Chandrasekharan was the guest of honour.

The Kerala Football Association President K. M. Mather and Kerala State Sports Council President T. P. Dasan were among those who attended the function.

The results: K. P. R. Gopalan Memorial GVHSS, Kallissery, Kannur 8 (K. A. Arun 4 goals, A. Ajmal 2, D. Athul and P. Nikhil 1 each) bt St. John’s HSS, Eraviperoor, Pathanamthitta 0.

Govt VHSS, Mampad, Malappuram 6 (A. T. Arshad 3 goals, Abhijith 2, K. Shahul 1) bt St. Joseph’s Boys HSS, Kozhikode 0.

Sacred Heart HSS, Thevara, Ernakulam 2 (Akshay Joshi 2 goals) bt Govt BHSS, Chalakudy, Thrissur 1 (Roshan Raju 1). — Principal Correspondent
